Reading headlines on the Supreme court ruling that the Alaska High School is within their right to suspend?
the student who made and displayed the inappropiate sign during a school function.
The "shock" headlines inferr that freedom of speech has been taken away from students.
My opinion: It was a school sponsored function; students should not be allowed to spout off or display that which is inappropriate. Neihter should they be allowed to act or dress inappropriately. This is part of teaching right from wrong.
ie: 'Do it on your own time. Take the heat on your own shoulders.'
An employer would not allow inappropreate activity during company functions because it reflects on the company.
I'm curious of other opinions. Was the decision correct or should students be allowed to say or do anything? AND. Do you think news headlines (student freedom of speach taken away) are insiting or not.
The decision is correct. Students do NOT have a right to unlimited free speech, and they certainly do not have immunity from repercussions of the use of speech.
When they are adults, and have all the rights that adults have, then they can say whatever they want.
