Should they have shot the men, not the tiger?
Three men mauled by a tiger had smoked cannabis and downed vodka shots before scaling the edge of the animal's enclosure and shouting at the creature, police say.
One of the men injured in the attack made the admissions to the father of his friend Carlos Sousa, 17, who was killed by the animal at San Francisco zoo.
In a police document, Mr Sousa's father said Paul Dhaliwal, 19, told him the friends had yelled and waved at the tiger while standing on a 3ft (1m) railing near the edge of the tiger moat.
Toxicology results showed Paul Dhaliwal had a blood alcohol level of twice the legal limit for driving, while Kulbir Dhaliwal, and Carlos Sousa had alcohol in their blood but within the legal limit.
All three also had cannabis in their systems.
Paul Dhaliwal denied suggestions that the friends dangled their legs over the enclosure, while authorities believe the tiger leapt over a wall 4ft (1.2m) shorter than the recommended minimum.
They sound like candidates for the Darwin awards!
